If I really were an albatross, I could have shown you what I saw from the sky and the ocean. But I'm only human ...

I drove to LV from north only once. It was exactly like what you described - the view was abosultely breathtaking.
Driving from south is much less dramatic; but if you drive back to LA from LV, imagine your eyes had been fed up with the barreness for over three hrs, then you started to climb the mountain, then at some point, after you made a turn, everything became so green, cloudy and fresh, then you know LA is ahead, ocean (!) is ahead ... it also was astounding experience.
... and dear anonymous, I still don't know who you are ;-)
I had exactly the same experience as "anonymous" back in 1998, driving to Las Vegas from Utah. Total darkness. Up and down the hill. Nothing. And then, exactly as "anonymous" described, such brightness hitting you right in the face. The most ridiculously urban oasis. It was truly breathtaking.
