台阶

后院有一片山坡,还挺陡的,大约有三四十度。下去种树、清扫都不方便,一直盘算要修个台阶。上网做了不少研究,还咨询了几个做建筑师的朋友,最后觉得应该用旧枕木(railroad tie)来做——一是便宜,二来容易,三者看上去也自然。

给我们做装修的朋友David正好有几根不用的枕木,抽空就给运过来了,还给了不少建议,教给我大致步骤,还有怎么用工具加工。

首先是用圆锯和条锯把长短不一的枕木锯成二尺多长的小段。这个工作花了我三个小时,一共锯出来三十多块。

然后和MM一起花了两个多小时把它们运到后院,再扔到山坡下。

第二天David演示了几层:先整出一块平地,打上两条钢管,平铺两块枕木作为基础。然后沿着枕木填土、夯实,铺上下一块枕木。按数学归纳法来说,有了1,再知道n到n+1怎么办,一切就都解决了。

现实当然是困难多了。我又花了一个下午和半个上午才修到山坡上。David说,这已经是快得超过他的想象了。

最后一步最累人:每段枕木上用电钻打上两到三个孔,然后打进二尺长的钢筋(rebar),这样枕木就和土地固定了。MM加入进来,自告奋勇打钢筋,容易的二十多锤,难的得有二百多锤。

中间还要返土上来补缝。

一共花了三天时间,修好了这么一条木台阶。接水管过来冲冲,浮土洗干净了,周围的回填土也实落了些。

中间特意拐了一个小弯,为了保住那丛芦荟。以后靠篱笆再多种几棵火龙果和银柳,另外一侧种些花,等花树和台阶长成一体的时候就好看了。

我在想,这个过程应该是从下往上还是从上往下修?

应该是从下往上修。第一层最好在平地,第n层摆好后,从上面填土才拦得住,然后是第n+1层。从上往下修的话容易塌。

Once you have a house, sooner or later, you will become a handyman/woman, unless you have lots of money to hire somebody to do it for you:)

But it seems you enjoy doing this, unlike us. I look forward to the day when kids are off to college, we can move into a maintenance-free cave.:)

How is becoming-a-handy-man a negative thing?

Becoming a handy man is definitely a positive thing, but the process of turning into a handy man is a painful thing for people who don't enjoy doing these work.
