Just for fun:
1)If there is no context to this scene and I don't know what they did/said or what really happened: The thought came to my mind would be the one that was left there with teary eyes may be the one who is with reasons, and the one that left is the one who is unreasonable and hurtful. And if the teary one died, the one who left after saying hurtful things would regret. :)

5)My trick to deal with kids' questions that are hard to answer: answer it as if you are at their age or distract them.
Q:"uncle, is micky real?"
A #1: "mm, that is a really good question. You are such a smart girl. let's go ask Micky himself and see what he says."

A#2: "mm, I don't know either. When you find out the answer, could you please let me know too?"

A#3: "what do you think?" (then go from there.)

Anyway, you can't lie to kids, but you don't have to answer them straightforward either when you couldn't. When you don't know how to answer them, play "dumb", kids like it when you treat them equally. You don't alwasy have to be the adult that is smarter than them and knows all the answers.
